Three Little Birds

Music has always been important to me. To be clear I have zero musical ability of my own – the depth of my talent was working the sound board at church for a few years 😂

But my dad has been a musician for most of his life (his band played at Liz and I’s wedding reception, including a solo by him for our first dance) so the importance of good tunes was instilled in me from a young age.

There are a ton of songs that will always remind me of a specific person and/or time in my life. “Best of You” by Foo Fighters brings to mind my sister Erin, right after she moved home from a short time living in Argentina. Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” will always make me think of my dad. My mom introduced me to a ton of music so there are more songs that remind me of her than anything can count. Beastie Boys “Sure Shot” (especially the intro of the dog barking 😂) will take me back to March Madness parties with my swimming friends.

This past year I would drive the kids to school every Tuesday and Wednesday and it was always a fight over what we would listen to during the 5-7 minutes of time. Usually Dylan used her powers of persuasion on Theo and we always turned to XM channel 13 for T Swift radio, but once that went off the air we started broadening our horizons again. One of the last days of the year, we decided to scan through the channels, and both kids told me to stop when they heard “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. And as we sat there waiting before they headed into school, the words hit me like a ton of bricks. All this time I spend wanting to help Liz, wishing I could take away her pain and discomfort…when there’s very little I can do…

Don’t worry about a thing. ‘Cause every little thing is gonna be alright.
